High School Teacher
One action that fits his quote would be Chris's specific action of finishing college (because that's what his parents wanted of him) and then severing ties with them for good. This was a very calculated action on his part; he fulfilled what he saw as his duty - graduating from college - and would do no more.
Another action that fits this quote would be Chris's reluctance to build a friendship/relationship with Ron Franz. When Ron wants to adopt Chris and be his "family", Chris refuses this offer. This speaks to the latter part of the quote - being in the crowd but seeking solitude. Chris managed to do this during his travels, never letting relationships fully form.
