Was Walt Whitman a champion of democracy?

The American Bard was a huge proponent of democracy. Whitman celebrated humanity in all of its forms. Freedom was a large part of this celebrated humanity because of its roots in freedom and democracy. Whitman believed every human was equal, had a right to be human, to make mistakes; freedom and democracy emphasizes his belief in equality.
