Nickolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Polish astronomer. Who was the first one do develop a concept of earth as a planet which moved around the Sun, as well as rotated around its axis. Prior to this earth was considered to be stationary. He showed that earth was one of several planets of the Earth.
Copernicus could not prove his theories, but he was able to show that the movement of all heavenly bodies could be explained much more easily as the visual effect of movement of the Earth.
His put down his ideas in a book called On the Revolution of the Heavenly Sphere published in 1543.
The work of Copernicus must have been of great help to other scientists like Galileo and Kepler, who in early seventeenth century developed the scientific knowledge that could prove the theories of Copernicus.
