Well, if you are thinking about universal patterns or archetypes, there are plenty for you to think about. The central universal pattern I think that is worthy of attention is the fraternal rivalry that we are shown in the relationship between Doodle and the narrator. Note how the narrator wants to "train" Doodle only because of his own pride rather than out of love for Doodle, and how the tragedy at the end is in part brought on by the desertion of Doodle by the narrator.
