Identify the independent and dependent variables for the following experiment.
A baseball coach hypothesizes that ballet training will improve the batting performance of his baseball team. He decides to have half of his players take six weeks of ballet training before baseball season begins. The independent variable in a study is the one that is supposed to have an effect on some other outcome. The dependent variable is the one that is supposed to be affected. In this case, the independent variable is the ballet training while the dependent variable is batting average.
Of course, the coach will need to be careful about this study. He will need to be sure to assign good and bad hitters to each half of the study. He might also want to tell the players that the ballet training is to make them better fielders. That way the ones who get the training won't become better hitters just because they think they should be.
