What is the first group to get the vote in Canada as in the timeline of the vote?

  1. In this assignment you will construct a timeline that indicates the years when different groups of people were granted the franchise in Canada.

Groups in your timeline should include:

    • women

    • Aboriginals

    • military personnel

    • Asian-Canadians (Choose either Chinese-, Japanese-, or Indo-Canadians.)

    • one other group of your choice

Use the information you have gathered to present on your timeline.

  1. For each of the five entries on your timeline, include: (2 marks for each entry)

    • the group that received the franchise

    • date

    • a picture or a symbol that represents this group (drawing, photo, picture from newspaper, magazine, or Web site)

The first group to get the vote were freeholders in 1856. An election was held in which forty persons participated under the first rules of enfranchisement. Freeholders had to own at least twenty acres of land. In 1866, voters were British subjects of three months residency in the locality who were landowners.
