For there to be pain, there has to be kindness. For darkness to stand out, there has to be the sun. What does this quote means?

What is the meaning of this quote? Can you give me the explanation of the meaning in detail and provide an example?

The quote you are asking about refers to an idea of contrast. If the only grade you could get in school was an "A" and everyone got the same grade, then suddenly there is no such thing as a "good grade" or a "bad grade".

In order for good and bad to exist, we need more than a single option. We need comparative or contrasting options.

Contrast is at the heart of this quote.
