Several songs have been written about Romeo and Juliet. A simple search will locate them. I would not use any of those because they are too obvious. For the theme of love at first sight, I might use Kylie Minogue's "Love at First Sight" or Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Boston's "More Than a Feeling" or Diana Ross's "Endless Love" would express that their love is real and not just "puppy love."

I vote for Tracey Ullman's song, "They Don't Know."

Here are the lyrics and a link to the video:

You've been around for such a long time now
Oh, maybe I could leave you but I don't know how
And why should I be lonely ev'ry night
When I can be with you
oh, yes, you make it right
And I don't listen to the guys who say
That you're bad for me
And I should turn you away
'Cause they don't know about us
And they've never heard of love
I get a feeling when I look at you
Wherever you go now I wanna be there too
They say we're crazy but I just don't care
And if they keep on talking
still they get nowhere

So I don't mind if they don't understand
When I look at you and you hold my hand
'Cause they don't know about us
And they've never heard of love
Why should it matter to us
If they don't approve
We should just take our chances
While we've got nothing to lose

Baby, there's no need for living in the past
Now I've found good loving gonna make it last
I tell the others don't bother me
'Cause when they look at you
They don't see what I see
No, I don't listen to their wasted lines
Got my eyes wide open and I see the signs
'Cause they don't know about us
And they've never heard of love
No, I don't listen to their wasted lines
Got my eyes wide open and I see the signs
'Cause they don't know about us
And they've never heard of love

Here's a link to the video.  (You'll have to use your imagination to picture these two as R&J, but it fits! :)

Wow! I forgot all about Tracy Ullman. I love that video--her with curlers in her hair, and Paul McCartney at the end. You know, I actually had a student ask me who the Beatles were? Who'd have ever thought!?

How about "I Finally Found Someone" by Bryan Adams and Barbara Streisand?  I think this is great since Romeo is always falling in love but with Juliet, he knows it's different and forever.

I FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE (Barbra Streisand & Bryan Adams)

I finally found someone, that knocks me off my feet
I finally found the one, that makes me feel complete
We started over coffee, we started out as friends
It's funny how from simple things, the best things begin

This time it's different, dah dah dah dah
It's all because of you, dah dah dah dah
It's better than it's ever been
'Cause we can talk it through
Oohh, my favorite line was "Can I call you sometime?"
It's all you had to say to take my breath away

(Chorus)
This is it, oh, I finally found someone
Someone to share my life
I finally found the one, to be with every night
'Cause whatever I do, it's just got to be you
My life has just begun
I finally found someone, ooh, someone
I finally found someone, oooh

Did I keep you waiting, I didn't mind
I apologize, baby, that's fine
I would wait forever just to know you were mine
And I love your hair, sure it looks fine
I love what you wear, isn't it the time?
You're exceptional, I can't wait for the rest of my life

(Repeat Chorus)

Whatever I do, it's just got to be you
My life has just begun
I finally found someone

"As Long As You Love Me"

As long as you love me

Although loneliness has always been a friend of mine
I'm leavin' my life in your hands
People say I'm crazy and that I am blind
Risking it all in a glance
And how you got me blind is still a mystery
I can't get you out of my head
Don't care what is written in your history
As long as you're here with me

I don't care who you are
Where you're from
What you did
As long as you love me
Who you are
Where you're from
Don't care what you did
As long as you love me

Every little thing that you have said and done
Feels like it's deep within me
Doesn't really matter if you're on the run
It seems like we're meant to be

I don't care who you are (who you are)
Where you're from (where you're from)
What you did
As long as you love me (I don't know)
Who you are (who you are)
Where you're from (where you're from)
Don't care what you did
As long as you love me (yeah)

I've tried to hide it so that no one knows
But I guess it shows
When you look into my eyes
What you did and where you're comin from
I don't care, as long as you love me, baby

I can just see it now... Romeo singing this to Juliet on the balcony and her doing the echoes.

I didn't have enough room to add my coments for the song "As Long As You Love Me".  Romeo, after being dissed by Rosalind is in such a state of mind that ANYONE who said, "I love you" would win him over.  He just happened to be the one to notice Juliet when she walked in the room and within five lines, he kisses her... twice...but he's REBOUNDING!  When he overhears Juliet's confession on the balcony, he rejoices in the fact that this one loves him back (his words to Friar Lawrence).  This makes him "love" her all the more.  So he doesn't "care who [she is] as long as [she] loves [him]".

I also thought of "What's Love Got to Do With It?"  because this is a tale of raging hormones, not real love.  THAT'S the tragedy of it all.  My classes are reading R&J right now, and we just finished the balcony scene yesterday.  If I'd known of this topic then, I'd have broken out into song!  My kids think R&J are bi-polar and go from one extreme to the next without any thinking in between.

Not bipolar. Just as you said--hormonal!!

What about the original R&J theme from the Zeffirelli 1968 film?  Yes, it's instrumental, but has such tragedy and pathos in the music that it's heartbreaking to listen to!  You can hear previews to all of the music on the soundtrack at this amazon.com link:

I think that the song in the the 1968 film is beautiful and very moving.  It captures the essence of the two characters and the emotion of the secene, as well as all young love.
