In the story The Californian's Tale by Mark Twain, what was the setting? And how did Twain create the suspense in the story?
I'm supposed to be readig this and I have. I'm not completely clear on the setting. And I need help on how he created the suspense.

and the setting is in Californa 1960s to 1970s.
i was thinking he used Henry, and had him acting like his wife would come, then the down fall was when you read about her being dead for 19 years.
