Here's one most people probably won't include: Stepping Razor by Peter Tosh.  If you're looking for something that is a bit different...  I'd use it for Tybalt.  It's all about how tough and dangerous (like a walking razor blade) the speaker is.

There have been several songs with Romeo and Juliet in the title over the years. Hector Berlioz wrote a symphony of the same name, and Peter Tchaikovsky penned a fantasy overture. Lou Reed (of The Velvet Underground) wrote "Romeo Had Juliet." Dire Straits also had a hit with their version of "Romeo and Juliet."

I would suggest the following songs. They have appeared in many versions of Romeo and Juliet movies and productions. Though some have a modern beat to them, they are free of any controversial or obscene language and can be heard by just about any student.

"#1 Crush" - Garbage

Local God - Everclear

"Angel" - Gavin Friday

"Pretty Piece of Flesh" - One-Inch Punch

Kissing You (Love Theme from Romeo + Juliet) - Des'ree –

"Whatever (I Had a Dream)" - Butthole Surfers

Lovefool - The Cardigans

Young Hearts Run Free - Kym Mazelle

Everybody's Free (To Feel Good) - Quindon Tarver

To You I Bestow - Mundy

Talk Show Host - Radiohead

Little Star - Stina Nordenstam

You and Me Song - The Wannadies

The 1990 production by Franco Zeffirelli has a beautiful soundtrack if you can use them.  One that begins, "A Time for Us...." ( Romeo and Juliet are Wed) was very popular for weddings.  The other titles from the soundtrack are as follows:

1.  Prologue                  2.  Meeting of Romeo and Juliet

3.  The Balcony Scene    4.  The Death of Mercutio and Tybalt

5.  Farewell Love Scene  6.  The Likeness of Death

You can order the songs off this soundtrack (Romeo and Juliet, Franco Zeffirelli, October 25, 1990

7.  In Capulet's Tomb     8.  All Are Punished

An old duet from the sixties by Peaches and Herb entitled "Always Together" would be an appropriate one to parallet the sonnet of Juliet and Romeo.

A great song for Romeo and Juliet would be Taylor Swift's "Love Story." It mimics the play to a certain point.  The two charachters do not die in the end but it may be useful.

There is a video on youtube that has scenes from the Leonardo deCaprio version of the movie set to the song "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis. That song is perfect for this story, especially the line "I don't care what they say, I'm in love with you."

Alicia Keys : Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart This is a good one for how Juliet might have been feeling when she was faced with marriage to Paris even though she was already married to Romeo, and she was holding the potion from the Friar in her hands.

There are several songs that include lyrics that make interesting comparisons to Romeo and Juliet. Among them:

"Teenager" by Better Than Ezra -- for comparisons to Romeo's character.

"One Last Breath" and "My Sacrifice" by Creed -- for connections to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet in the tomb.

"Satellite" by Dave Matthews Band -- for comparisons to the balcony scene.
