x - y = 1 ........(1)

2x + y = 5 ......(2)

Using the elimination method, we will add (1) and (2) so y will cancel:

==> 3x = 6

Now divide by 3:

==> x = 6/3 = 2

==> x = 2

Now to solve for y, substitute in (1):

x- y = 1

2- y = 1

2 - 1 = y

1= y

==> y= 1
