Sex and the things that come along with it, are now more in the mainstream then ever.  By a conservative estimate, sex crimes have risen approximately 66% in the last 10 years with some experts saying that it will continue to increase for the next several years.

It is difficult for researchers to determine why the number of sex crimes has been increasing in the past ten years. Yet at least one government has documented an increase:

recorded ... sexual assaults have both increased steadily in the past 10 years by over 40 percent and 20 percent respectively. ... sexual assault the rate of increase was greater for children aged under 15 years, with increases almost double that of the older age group. (Australia Institute of criminology)

Causes are not yet determined but a partial hypothesis is that public awareness of sexual assault within families at home has increased.  Here are a few possible factors that may be contributing to this rise.

  • More reporting.  It may really not be true that more sex offenses are happening today.  Instead, it may be the case that more victims are feeling that it is appropriate and acceptable to report the offenses.  This may simply be a case that crimes are remaining stable but more of them are being reported.
  • Society is becoming more sexualized.  If there really are more sexual offenses, it may be because society is more saturated with sexual imagery.  We are constantly being exposed to sexual imagery in our lives.  This may cause people to think more about sex and to want sex more.  If so, they might commit more sexual offenses.
  • Rising power of women.  Most sexual offenses are committed against women.  In many ways, these are offenses caused by a desire for power.  Offenders want to feel more powerful than their victims.  In today’s society, women are becoming more powerful.  If men are feeling weakened and devalued, they may commit more offenses as a way of making themselves feel more powerful.
  • Bad economy.  Relatedly, people may be more frustrated by the weak economy.  If this is so, they might act out their anger and frustration by committing sexual offenses.
