sea can be regarded as the protagonist in this play. The sea is both the source of substenance for the family and the reason for its destruction. It is the sea that takes the action forward in the play. Thus it becomes an imp off stage character. Sea is the symbolic representation of death/ fate , while all other characters in the play are merely representative figures of Aran life.
