Daniel Defoe, writing in the middle of the seventeenth century, imparted a realistic experience of humanism through his novels, especially Robinson Crusoe. The early novels were very didactic and were mainly written for infusing moral values in the people. It was an age of colonial expansion and materialism. So in order to infuse thoughts of spirituality and religion into the people their writings were in a very realistic and detailed manner.the common saying of Pope,"To err is human,to forgive, divine" is portrayed through Defoe's novel 'Robinson Crusoe'.The novel portrays how men repent and realize only in the extreme circumstances of survival.Well, coming to the humanity part of Crusoe,I consider it in three stages,
1)Crusoe and Xury
2)Crusoe and Friday
3)Crusoe and the Spaniards along with the men of the ship.
Crusoe was an ambitious young man, when Xury came into his life.Crusoe could have drowned the boy,but he resolved to treat him with kindness as he thought it to be the only way to gain loyalty from Xury.Had Xury been left there along with the moors he would have also grown into a brutish young man.He sent Xury along with the Captain only because of the promising words ,that he would change him into a Christian.Considering Friday,I would say that Crusoe was desperate for human company, so he took Friday into his custody. It is to be noted that he didn't USE Friday as a base slave. He gave him good clothes to wear, good food to eat and also made him a little refined. He not only thought him his language but also the activities that he knew.We can also say that to a certain extent, that Friday was Crusoe's student.Coming to the Spaniards who escaped from the sea and the Englishmen who stirred the mutiny,Crusoe not only left them an island, fully furnished with all necessary provisions but also sent them stocks of necessities so that they wouldn't perish in there. After getting a huge amount of money into his inheritance,he helped the poor widow and his sisters without any kind of expectations. He also considered it to be his sole responsibility to look after and culture his nephews. Please note that Defoe's period was a period when people began to show selfish attitudes, ambitious thoughts, individuality and independence. So these novels were written for propagating values of humanism and religion to the masses.
