What are some reasons for community colleges to ban smoking in campus?

I am trying to write an argumentative essay and would like to talk about a few good reasons why they should make it illegal to smoke in campus.

As you research this topic, I encourage you to look for reasons why smoking bans have been implemented in places other than college campuses and make direct comparisons.  Consider that entire cities and states have passed smoking bans in restaurants and other commercial businesses.  Consider the smoking bans in airports, hospitals, even bowling alleys.  I have heard recently about discussion in North Carolina to ban smoking in a city park.

The main reason for banning smoking anywhere is to protect non-smokers from the dangers of second hand smoke.  A large part of the focus of your essay could be on the dangers of second hand smoke.  In addition, smoke fumes, over time, cause damage to carpet, walls, furniture, etc.  Part of your essay could also look at this.  Finally, you might want to research whether there is evidence to suggest that smoking bans have influenced the number of people who smoke or possibly affected the number of people who have quit.

The major reason for banning smoking on a community college campus would be to protect the health of people who do not smoke.  If you consult the article in the link below, you can see a discussion of the health effects of "environmntal tobacco smoke" which is often called second hand smoke.  These effects are the reason why it would be acceptable to ban smoking on a community college campus.

For example, the articles says that second hand smoke is estimated to cause about 3,000 deaths every year among Americans who do not smoke.  This shows that smoking is not just a personal choice.  If some students' choice to smoke affects others' personal health, it is legitimate to ban that particular choice.

A community college could ban smoking because smoking poses a risk to the health of people who are exposed to the smoke, even if they are not the ones smoking.

Most people on community college campuses are young. Young people who develop lounge cancer might die young. Community colleges have a lot of outside areas often, and there is a chance that people will pass a lot of smokers on the way to classes.

Young people have grown up in a time where we know of the dangers of smoking. I really see no reason why people my age would smoke. That said, I don't think a college campus is an appropriate place to smoke. It endangers non-smokers through second hand smoke. The cigarette waste litters campus and takes way from the cleanliness. It also just smells bad and degrades the overall campus vibe.
