Q. `P_4` + `NaOH` `->` `A` + `B`

In above reaction,what is the oxidation number of phosphorus in the products `A` and `B` ?

A)+3,-1

B)-1,+3

C)-3,+1

D)+1,-3

The balanced chemical equation for the reaction between `P_4 ` and `NaOH` is:

`P_4+3NaOH+3H_2O->PH_3+3NaH_2PO_2`  

                                                    ` (A)`                  ` (B)`

Let the oxidation number of phosphorus in the product A be x. Then,

`x+(+1)*3=0`

`rArr x=-3`

Again, let the oxidation number of phosphorus in the product B be y. Then, `(+1)+(+1)*2+y+(-2)*2=0`

`rArr y=+1`

Hence, the oxidation number of phosphorus in the products `A` and `B` is -3,+1.

Therefore, option c) is the correct answer.
