Michael Jackson was an American singer who is, according the Guinness Book of World Records, the most successful entertainer of all time.
Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana in 1958. By 1964, he was performing with his brothers in public at the behest of their father. They soon became popular nationwide as the Jackson 5. The group signed with Motown Records in 1968. It set records when the first four singles that it released hit Number 1. Through this all, though, Jackson’s father abused him physically and verbally, contributing to problems he endured later in life.
Jackson then embarked on a solo career with Epic Records. His first album Off the Wall, reached Number 3 on the Billboard charts. His next album, Thriller, became the biggest selling album of all time and made him a huge star. He started calling himself the “King of Pop.”
From there, however, Jackson’s career and life went downhill. His later albums sold well, but not nearly as well as Thriller. More importantly, he encountered grave problems in his personal life. Most importantly, he was accused of child sexual abuse.
Jackson continued to become more and more eccentric in his actions and in the degree to which he changed his appearance through plastic surgery. He eventually died of the effects of prescription drug abuse in 2009. His doctor was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the case.
Jackson was married twice and had 3 children.
