When people are subjected to never-ending poverty, the likelihood that they will fall victim to ruthless ambition, excessive drinking and criminalistic behaviors increases.

Poverty can be related to evil, but does not directly cause it. The environment a child grows up in influences what he turns into. You can "make" evil by surrounding a child with enough depravity. I would argue that ruthless ambition and evil are often closely associated. If a person is ambitious enough, and ruthless enough not to act with conscience, the results can be described as evil. Growing up in a depraved environment often exacerbates this ambition in people who have the tendency. This can lead to excessive drinking for self-destruction if the person does have pangs of conscience.
