Please help me brainstorm why conforming to a stereotype is the easiest option when it comes to gender roles.

This is a good question. Here are few starting points. Each society has a sense of what is right and wrong. We can say that each society has it own sensibilities or commonsense  view of how things should be done. These points also apply to gender. For example, in some societies, men and women are equal, like America. In other countries, women restricted in the home only, like the Middle East. Based on these points, what is easiest to do is to live within the boundaries the stereotype. In other words, if you do what society expects you to do, then it will be the easiest option.

If you break the stereotype, then you may get some resistance or feel uncomfortable at the least. If the breaking of the stereotype is significant, then there can even be persecution.
