This element is the fourth most common element in Earth. Magnesium is the eleventh most abundant element by mass in the human body. This element's ions are important in such things as ATP, DNA and RNA. Many of the body's enzymes require magnesium to function. It is a component of chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants so essential to photosynthesis and the production of glucose. It is a component of such medicines as Milk of magnesia which neutralizes stomach acid. When someone has blood vessel spasms or if nerves are too excited, it may be used to return the body to homeostatic levels. This element can be used in bombs, flash photography, and in alloys for production of air crafts and car engine casings and in missile construction.
