At the beginning of Chapter 3 of "The Outsiders" we learn that due to an earlier confrontation, Cherry and her friends don't have a ride home.  The girls, at first, want to call their parents and have them come and pick them up from the drive-in.  They finally agree to let Two-bits pick up his car and drive them home.  Even though Ponyboy thinks the "girls are still half afraid of them" they agree and are walking toward Two-bit's home to pick up the car.  On their way to Two-bit's home Bob and other socs drive up in the Mustang and the girls go home with them to avoid a fight.

Cherry comes to the drive-in with her drunken boyfriend, Bob (Leif Garrett), and leaves because she is upset with his drinking. She goes to the seats with her friend Marcia and ends up sitting in front of Ponyboy, Dally, and Johnny. They hit it off, and all walk home from the drive-in until Bob and Marcia's boyfriend, Randy, show up in their blue Mustang and ask them to get in. The girls oblige in order to avoid a fight between the Greasers and Socs right then and there.
