When the officer asks Ralph if they were having a war or something it is ironic in two ways. Firstly, the novel takes place during wartime. Secondly, it is ironic because the WERE having a type of war of conquest on the island. A war where the uncivilized savages were winning until order is restored with the coming of adults.
