A city council decided to investigate the number of HIV victims in the community. By comparing hospital records for all patients known to be sufferers of HIV, list 1, with the list of sufferers on the Medicare list, list 2, the following data was obtained.
List 1: 946 sufferers
List 2: 392 sufferers of whom 176 were also from list one.
A.) based on these figures determine the number of hive sufferers in the region

Draw a Venn diagram with two overlapping circles.
If the first circle, A, represents the hospital and the second circle B represents Medicare then you have the following:
A=946 So the number in the circle is 946-176=770
B=392 So the number in the circle is 392-176=216
`AnnB=176` (The intersection of A and B is 176).
(a) The number of hiv sufferers in the region is `A+B-AnnB=1162`
**This is the same as adding 770+216+176=1162.
(b) The number who are not on both lists is 1162-176=986
