In the novel Christopher is trying to escape the confines of modern living by escaping to the freedom of the wilderness where he can live how he wants to live in total freedom. He is driven there by a resentment he harbours for his parents, which festers into a resentment and hatred for society in general. It is based on the true story of the author.
