Gale- Katniss's hunting mate, likes Katniss
The main characters in the hunger games are obviously Katniss and Peeta. Katniss is a girl who has learned to be quiet and keep her feelings off her face. Peeta is a boy who has led a more shelter life; while he has know difficulty, he has not know the dangers and hardships of someone from the Seam.
When listing major characters, we cannot leave out Primrose, Katniss's sister. Prim is the reason Katniss has entered the hunger games. Prim is delicate, kind, and gentle. She has a loving personality and serves as a counterbalance to some of the harsher points in Katniss's nature.
We must also consider Gale a major character since he is helping to keep Katniss's family alive while she fights. He is her oldest and dearest friend. While Gale harbors more than friendship for Katniss, she is unsure of her feelings for him. The unknown aspects of her relationship with Gale further complicate her pretend romance with Peeta.
Of course, there are many other characters that serve important roles in the story. There are 22 other tributes that serve vital roles in the story; especially little Rue, who's death and subsequent impromptu funeral spark the seeds of revolution in district 11. There are the stylist, particularly Cinna, that will come to serve an important function in the following books. There is also the former tribute and mentor, Haymitch, as well as their guide and chaperon, Effie.
