Here are some that might work for you:
unemployment: Many people lost their jobs during the Depression. Unemployment was very high.
vagabond: Many people became homeless during the Depression and wandered from place to place, looking for work, food, and shelter.
yield: The economy was so weak during the Depression that investments did not yield (earn) very much in financial returns.
V: vagrants (such as hobos)
Y: yearn (as in hope or a strong desire)
Underconsumption and overinvestment led to an economic bubble that was an underlying cause of the Great Depression.
Vicious cycle, with virtually every country being affected by the U.S.'s Great Depression
Black Tuesday - Coming up with the y is hard!
