General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard was born near New Orleans, Louisiana on May 28, 1818.
Beauregard attended West Point, graduating second in his class. He served with distinction in the Mexican-American War, earning two brevet promotions (in those days, that was the only recognition of valor -- there were no medals yet).
During the Civil War, Beauregard served in many places. He was the commander of the troops in Charleston, South Carolina who effectively started the Civil War by taking Fort Sumter. He was at the first major battle of the war -- Bull Run/Manassas. He was also at Shiloh.
Of course, he served in many other places. Please follow the links for more.
