"A Modest Proposal" Topic

For my assignment on "A Modest Proposal," my topic is drugs. The problem is I can't think of an outrageous solution to the increasing drug rate.

This is a good topic to pick, so well done! You might want to think of a solution but coming from a slightly different direction. Have you thought of the solution actually being for the government to supply heroin to every citizen and to legally require them to take it? It would be brilliant because then, if everyone is addicted to heroin, there would be no "problem" as such because it would just be considered a natural part of human life! It would also allow governments to legally control the flow and dissemination of heroin rather than the lack of checks and controls that it has now, and thus make sure that the heroin that it supplies to its citizens is of the best quality and not adulterated with any other chemicals that could be dangerous. It will also remove the stigma of being a "drug user" as everyone will be a drug user, whilst allowing the government to raise more money through taxing heroin in the same way that cigarettes are taxed. Pregnant mothers can be made addicted so that their children will be addicted when they are born, thus making sure that nobody escapes this blessing. What do you think?!

To accesstecher- thanks you so much! actually i was thinking about that solution too. Now, i am sure what i am going to do. BUt i have another question for you- how givign an outrageous solution or even making the negative thing like drug into positive, is satire. I mean how exactly does the satires do?

I was actually thinking about doing this in the other direction.  Presumably, the best way to actually help drug users is to get them rehabilitation.  However, we tend to address their problems in a punitive way.  So I was thinking that you could be outrageous by going in the other direction.  You should suggest that the thing to do is to kill everyone who ever takes drugs.

To me, this is satire because it shows what a policy would do brought to its logical extreme.  In Swift's essay, the English were exploiting the Irish poor and so Swift said, essentially, "let's *really* exploit them by eating them."  Here, our policy is to punish drug users, so lets *really* punish them.

I kind of get what you mean but in other why. To me killing them is satire because no mateer what we do , they are gonna die sooner than others because of drugs. So to it kind of makes it funny that we are really just fast forwarding the effect of the drugs they are taking and instead of making them die slowing we are giving them instead death. So, i guess this shows that government does effort every year to stop drugs but they can't really do anything because drug addicts are going to take drugs anyway and die slow death.

Just as Jonathan Swift suggested that people eat the babies to decrease the starving population, why not have the government distribute drugs to the elderly in the U.S. so that  their lives will be shortened and decrease "the surplus population" as Scrooge said?  This allowing the elderly to be on hallucinatory drugs will prevent them from being a problem to their children, to healthcare employees, etc.  It will also relieve the Social Security Fund.

Adding to accesssteachers inspred ideas, perhaps drugs could be made free and legal, therefore cutting down the crimes asssociated with dealing, extortion, money laundering etc. As with the other suggestions, free access would remove the criminal associatons with drugs and perhaps lower the numbers of prison inmates who are a burden on the taxpayer. Free access and legality would also remove the excitement and danger associated with drugs so teenagers may be less likely to indulge. Maybe drug taking should be a necessary part of the school curriculum for teenagers: they can be fully 'educated' that way...
