I love the way you asked this question, mainly because "modern" is always relative to the time in which you are living. That's the beauty of the image of the lotus fruit, for each age has its escape mechanisms. TV? Ever just want to zone out and forget, about homework, chores, problems at home or with friends? You may be choosing the lotus fruit over the harder path that will bring you success or understanding. Odysseus was able to resist the lotus fruit, among other temptations. Some kids choose drugs. But those that resist usually find a more satisfying "trip home," as Odysseus might say.
