Martinique is a Caribbean island that is a a department of France, the French Lesser Antilles. It is the birthplace and home of the famous Josephine who married Napoleon.
Perhaps the most famous landmark is Mount Pelee located in the former capital of Saint-Pierre, known in the 1800s as the Paris of the West Indies. But, on the morning of May 8, 1902, Mt. Pelee exploded, and 30,000 people were destroyed in a matter of a few minutes. Only one person, a prisoner, survived the eruption because he was protected by the prison cell's walls.
