A ladder 7 m long reaches a window 5 m above the ground. Find the distance of the foot of the ladder from the wall base.

The length of the ladder is 7 m. It is placed on the ground beside a wall such that the top reaches a window at a height of 5 m above the ground. The distance of the foot of the ladder from the base of the wall has to be determined.

The ladder, the wall and the ground form a right angled triangle with the ladder as the hypotenuse. Let the distance of the base of the ladder from the wall be x. Using the Pythagorean theorem, x^2 + 5^2 = 7^2

=> x^2 = 49 - 25

=> x^2 = 24

=> x = `2*sqrt 6`

The distance of the foot of the ladder from the base of the wall is `2*sqrt 6` m
