Knowing the characteristics of both Caroline Bingley and Elizabeth Bennet, how can we determine that they are both somewhat interested in Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
i feel the tension between the two but i have no idea why they are both going after him when there are evidently many other men on the market?

The tension between Caroline Bingley and Elizabeth Bennett has more to it than the pursuit of Mr. Darcy. Caroline is a snob and feels that Mr. Darcy would help to increase her status in the social network of the town. Caroline increases her interest in Darcy to out do Lizzie, who Caroline feels is beneath her.
The women may have other men to choose from but none is as presentable and desirable as Mr. Darcy.
It may be said that the women are vying for Darcy's attention but that is not entirely true as Lizzie snubs Darcy. However, as the story plays out, it becomes clear that he is much more of a man of integrity than she would have believed. Lizzie becomes a challenge for Darcy.
