In order to answer this question, you need to know what each feeding type is.

  • Herbivores = plant eating organisms
  • 1st level consumers= organisms that consume producers (includes herbivores and others like algae eating organisms)
  • Producers - Algae, plants, other photosynthetic organisms that can use energy from the sun (or in more rare cases, chemicals) to make their own food.
  • 2nd level consumers - consume 1st level consumers
  • 3rd level consumers - consume 2nd level consumers
  • Parasites - organisms that live off of other organisms in a way that is harmful to the host organism but usually does not kill the host (examples: ticks, mosquito, tapeworm, hookworm)
  • Decomposers - organisms that consume dead organic matter.  Many fungi and bacteria are decomposers.  Most things that "rot" are being broken down by bacteria that feed on the organic material in dead organisms.  Think of where the dead leaves and grass goes.
