According to freud ego is caracterized as a 'somatic-ego'. That means that the origin of the pcyche existence derives from the bodily functions. Freuds drive theory is based on this concept.Freud argued 18th centurie philosophics conception of rationalism(descarte"s conarium etc) that human soul has an existence per se. drives are form of energy essential for meeting somatic(later more complex) needs. No specific remark about the skin function .D. anzieu was a pioneer in that field(see le moi peau).he observes how ego mfunctions are been developed depending on skin functions.anzieu argued that skin sets boundaries between me and not me. Skin functions like a membrane and permits the distinction between inside and outside. Also it creates a secure area where good objects can be kept and the outside where bad objects(or untollerable fillings etc) can be projected.this concept is faliar to winnicott's 'holding mother' which secures the infant from untollerable feelings . Vital organ, is the onlyone we can see, touch or manipulate. It has much to do with our appearance, beauty, tender, sexuality. Anzieu said that skin is the individual'stwin and without him there;s nothing. very important is the role of maternal conduct with the infant wich creates an illusion of common skin . The attachement drive(distinct from freud's oral drive) is mammals tendency to keep proximity to a particular individual of the group. The baby holds mothers breast, hands body or clothes to avoid what it would be a catastrophe. The ego-skin is based on this function as well as to certain skin functions; a sac that holds inside the good and total object representations, a barrier that keeps outside any penetrations or agression, a space to communicate, a surface of inscription, the capacity to filter the exchanges etc. The Ego-skin instauration is a response to a narcissistic need for self protection. It assures a basic well being when at the same moment the Ego differantiates its functions as the result of multiple object indentifications. Just to mention that skin its not only an external organ but it also envelops the internal organs of the body
