At this point, I think that there are good and bad influences on China.  It is important that China develop better human rights, but it is also too bad that they seem to have taken the negative parts of capitalism and not the positive ones.  It is about profit at any cost.

Though this complicated subject has two perspectives--China's and the West's--it is true that when the Jesuit priests entered China in the 1500s, there was an exchange of ideas in sciences and maths that was equally beneficial to China and the West. Things got more complicated as Western political, military and economic forces intensified around China.

One way to look at this is to say that it was good for China because it pulled China out of its old imperial system that prevented any real progress.  By forcing themselves on China, the imperial powers made China progress towards modernity.
