Nora specifically asks Helmer to give her money. Unknown to him, Nora has taken a loan. She did this when he was sick and needed to move temporarily to a different climate, and they didn't have the money to go. She skims a little bit of money off of her housing and clothing allowances, slowly paying back her debit. She is finally to the point where she is almost free from it, and Helmer's promotion should help her repay the last amount. Nora prides herself on this secret, because Helmer doesn't believe that she is able to manage herself or her money.
