Identify the advantages and disadvantages to the career of a student who takes a job after graduation with a Hilton Inns franchise and passes up an offer from Hilton Hotels, the parent company.

Essentially, this is a question about the pros and cons of working in a bigger company as opposed to a smaller company. While there is no one set of pros and cons that is true of all big companies or all small companies, there are some general rules about the differences.
If the student takes a job with a franchise, they are more likely to get to do many different things. A franchise is much smaller than the parent company and is therefore likely to be much less bureaucratized. In the big company, the graduate will fill a given niche in the company. They will do one thing and they will do it according to set procedures. In the small company, they will do many more things and will have much more freedom with regard to how to do them.
With regard to the graduate’s future, there is something of a tradeoff here. If the graduate goes to work for the franchise, they will likely be seen as something of a “member of the family.” They are likely to have a great deal of job security. This is in contrast to the parent company, which is more likely to treat the person as a cog in an impersonal machine. Such a cog would be much more likely to be laid off than the member of the family. On the other hand, the employee at the large company has much more in the way of upward mobility. There are set ways for lower level employees to rise. In the franchise, the upper levels may be solidly in the hands of the owners’ family and may not really be open to others.
Thus, there will be pros and cons either way. The graduate can go to the franchise, become more rounded, and have better job security or they can go to the parent company, become more specialized, and have less security but more opportunity for advancement.
