The play is about the conflict between King Henry II of England and his friend, Thomas Becket, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury. During their power struggle, King Henry complained would no one rid him of this Becket. Some of his knight slipped into the cathedral and murdered the archbishop as he prayed. Legend has it that Becket was wearing a hair shirt under his robes, and he was eventually canonized as a a Catholic saint.
