Since the story concerns two main characters, Emily and her mother, your formal outline could have two main sections:

I. Emily's mother

II. Emily

Under each section, consider the general information that comes to you about each of these characters. For instance, the story tells us their personal backgrounds. It also suggests their two distinct personalities. At the end of the story, for instance, Emily is optimistic and untroubled; her mother is thoughtful and serious.

With these in mind, you might be able to use this plan for your basic outline structure:

I. Emily's mother

A. Personal history

B. Personality traits

II. Emily

A. Personal history

B. Personality traits

By researching the story, you could then fill in specific details as 1, 2, 3, etc. under each A and B subsections.

If your formal outline must be a sentence outline, just turn each of your headings, subheadings, and 1,2,3 details into short sentences that are correctly punctuated as complete sentences.
