Hume is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures in the history of Western philosophy. His contributions are many. First, he served as a voice against the uncritical acceptance of reason often associated with Enlightenment thought. He also offered a rational critique of religion, and especially miracles, arguing, basically, that things that cannot be observed are almost certainly not authentic. In short, Hume brought a hard-headed skepticism to western philosophy, one which could be said to characterize he mainstream of thought since the Enlightenment. His critique of reason was an inspiration (or a provocation) to many philosophers, including Immanuel Kant, who said reading Hume's comments on the subject "interrupted my dogmatic slumber."
