The answer to this question is actually pretty tricky. I'm just going to stick to the facts about what is generally accepted about William Shakespeare. The man from Stratford-on-Avon was born in 1564 and died in 1616. The theatrical records that survive from that time period are pretty sketchy about details of his life. 1594 to 1595 is one of the generally accepted dates of the play's possible composition, because it is believed to have been first performed around 1596. That would put Shakespeare at the age of 30 to 31.
