During Shakespeare's time in history women where certainly not given the same advantages that the men of the society were. Women were left to be dependent on the men. Shakespeare's times included the Elizabethan Era which brought the Renaissance. Women of high noble class were sometimes given the privilege of an education, but it would take place by tutors in the home. They would be allowed to learn reading and writing and even different languages, but the primary focus would be focused on social etiquette. The common women did not have these advantages. They were taught how to carry out the duties of a housewife. All women in this time, noble or common, were expected to get married and serve their husband.
