How has the definition of diversity changed over time?

Originally, diversity in the United States meant rectifying the historical discrimination against African Americans. More recently, that has been extended to a broader understanding of what diversity means. First, it means positions should not be segregated by gender (i.e. the Board of Directors should include women and there should be male receptionists). Next, there should be diversity over a wide range of ethnicities (Asian, Hispanic, Native American, etc.), religions, national origins, class (i.e. people from poor and rich families should both be represented) and sexual preferences (gay and straight people).

Can a diverse workforce help a company compete more effectively?

Yes. A 1950s style company consisting only of white men would have a difficult time relating to a diverse customer base. Companies need to be able to think outside narrow sub-cultural prejudices. Also, as the economy is increasingly globalized, companies need to be diverse and flexible to adapt to international markets and supply chains.
