The Classic Greek and Roman periods were marked by realistic, three-dimensional representations of forms and events, rather than earlier representations of geometric forms and unrealistic flat forms.

Van Eyck's The Arnolfini Portrait shows Classic Greek and Roman influence in the attention to detail, realism of form, representation of realistic events.
