A "wild" boy from the Fen (forest), Matt takes a certain personal risk when he salvages Kira's things from her mother's cott before it is burned. (This was half-superstition, but also a measure to prevent the spreading of contagious diseases.) When Kira is relocated in the Council Edifice, he comes to see her faithfully, bringing her small gifts and tokens of friendship. Later on in the story when Kira's father, supposedly dead, shows up in hiding, it is Matt who finally leads him back to his own village by serving as a scout through the 'hostile' forest.
