In Book X of the Odyssey, Homer describes Odysseus` visit to the island of Circe. The scouting party visits Circe`s house. Circe is a sorceress or minor goddess, daughter of Helios, the sun god. When the scouts reach her house, that stands in a clearing in the woods, they see what appear to be many exotic tame beasts wandering around. She invites the men inside and offers them wine and food, into which she has added drugs. Once they have consumed the food and wine and she touches them with her wand they are magically transformed into pigs and she herds them into a pen.
