The Holy Grail appears in Arthurian legend as the objective of the ultimate quest for Arthur's knights. While King Arthur does not go on the quest himself, multiple knights of the Round Table do pursue it. Book Six of Le Morte d'Arthur primarily focuses on the Grail Quest, as several of Arthur's best knights, like Gawain, Galahad, and Percivale, leave Camelot and the Round Table in order to pursue the Grail. In the Le Morte d'Arthur version, the Grail quest serves as a guiding metaphor as the knights face peril and temptation for the virtues and beliefs of Christianity versus the some of the older, more pagan beliefs embedded in the Arthurian legends.
