How does culture influence marriage/expectation of marriage?
1 Answer | add yours
All cultures or societies are socially constructed. This is to say that people make culture. This is why all cultures are different. Therefore, what is commonsense in one part of the world is odd in another part of the world.
Based upon this insight, expectations of marriage will differ greatly, based on where you live. For example, if you live in places in Africa, where polygamy is the norm, than you would expect that a man may marry many women. If you live in a strict Muslim culture, monogamy would be the norm and divorce would be unheard of. If you live in America, the norm is monogamy, but you would see more divorces.
In a word, whatever culture you live in will shape your worldview of things, which include marriage.
