As time progresses in the book, Antonio loses his faith. It all started when he witnessed one of Ultima's cures. He started to question why the church couldn't help, yet Ultima could. Also, when he saw the Golden carp and its beauty, he questioned his own god. He also questioned when he saw poor Narcisco die, the town drunk, but he was doing good when he was murdered. Also, he wondered why is there such evil that God cannot protect us from. When florence drowned, he also questioned his faith. Toward the end of the book, he wanted to be a priest, but where it included the good of everything that he wanted in a religion.
