The characters in the Scarlet Letter are completely guided by their suspicions and beliefs of the supernatural. Without their supernatural beliefs they never would have condemned Hester Prynne to solitude and humiliation, because her act of committing adultery would not have even been wrong. Almost everything the Puritan colonists did in Boston was affected by their beliefs in the supernatural.
